What did you do this past week?

This past week, I spent my time designing my implementation of the Life project and fixing its makefile. Figuring out how to get each test in the student repository to run was particularly challenging, but I managed to figure it out after spending an evening dedicated to the issue.

What’s in your way?

I don’t have much left to do for the Life project because my implementation is passing all of the HackerRank and student acceptance tests. I need to make sure I don’t feel too relaxed on Monday, however, because I still need to do everything not related to the actual solution before submitting.

What will you do next week?

I am going to try to avoid thinking about school this upcoming week and enjoy the holiday with my friends and family. I cannot go out and see my friends in person this Thanksgiving, but the new World of Warcraft expansion is coming out on Monday and I am going to spend launch time with them there.

If you read it, what did you think of What Happens to Us Does Not Happen to Most of You?

The article this week was hard to read. As a male, I cannot relate with the stories and struggles described by the women in the blog post, but reading about them made me feel very uncomfortable and disappointed that they even experienced it at all. I hope that things are getting better as time passes and more and more women are entering the industry.

What was your experience of inheritance?

Inheritance was a fun topic to discuss in class. Similar to last week, I don’t necessarily feel like I’ve learned anything new, but it was still nice to go over and refresh my thoughts on the subject.

What made you happy this week?

I felt particularly accomplished after finding a solution to the Life project after a single night (I don’t count my time debugging the makefile). I think that this might have been the least amount of time I spent on programming the solution for a project in this class. Besides that, I managed to hit personal records of mine in some games this weekend and that always feels great.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

I’ve often felt like there weren’t enough hours in the day to get everything I wanted or needed to get done completed. This past week, I’ve been waking up at 5:00 AM and it truly is amazing how much longer the day feels even when compared to waking up at 7:00 AM. I can spend 2 hours in the morning getting work done which frees up 2 hours later on in the day for anything that I might want or need to do.
